2 CONT "As early as 1837, efforts were made to organize a Baptist Church in the 
2 CONC town of Salem by the Salem-Union Association but the nearness of other 
2 CONC churches, notably Enon on Carter's Run, hindered the progress. In 1879 
2 CONC the Potomac Association appointed the Rev. Samuel M. Athey as missionary 
2 CONC to work in the Salem area. His labors culminated in the constitution of a 
2 CONC New School Baptist Church at Marshall in 1882.

2 CONT There were nine members of the new congregation transferred from Long 
2 CONC Branch, Warrenton, Enon and Carter's Run: Thomas R. Foster, William H. 
2 CONC Garrison, Charles H. Fewell, William E. Grubbs, John Burke, Miss Marianna 
2 CONC Foster, Mrs. E. J. Garrison, Mrs. S. F. Cockerill, and Mrs. Mary Flynn. 
2 CONC Of these, T. R. Foster and William H. Garrison were elected deacons, 
2 CONC William L. Grubbs clerk, J. E. Burke treasurer. The Rev. S. M. Athey was 
2 CONC unanimously elected to be the first pastor.

2 CONT The following day, July 23, the house of worship which had been erected 
2 CONC on a lot donated by T. R. Foster was dedicated. Dr. I. B. Lake preached 
2 CONC the dedication sermon.

2 CONT During a welcoming ceremony in Marshall, VA in 1879 of the Marshall

2 CONT "The band then played 'In the Sweet Bye and Bye' and the Reverend Samuel 
2 CONC M. Athey, a Baptist minister of whom we will hear more later, held forth 
2 CONC for another hour. He revealed that there were men in the church who drank 
2 CONC 40 gallons of whiskey a year, yet called themselves moderate drinkers and 
2 CONC were respected in the community. He was widely applauded. After Mr. 
2 CONC Athey's oration, lemonade was served and the speaker's stand collapsed."

2 CONT "The Reverend Samuel Milton Athey was, by 1879, a familiar figure in 
2 CONC Salem. He was a missionary from the Potomac Association, a devoted and 
2 CONC tireless minister of the Gospel and a powerful speaker. It was his most 
2 CONC cherished ambition to establish a church in Salem [now Marshall / CCA].
2 CONT 
2 CONT Samuel Milton Athey was born in 1844 in Orlean, Virginia, the son of a 
2 CONC staunch Baptist family who had lived there for some time. He was baptized 
2 CONC at sixteen and a little more than a year later joined the Confederate 
2 CONC Army. Ultimately he found himself in Pickett's Division and, on the 3rd 
2 CONC of July, 1863, gazed with troubled eyes across the vast battlefield of 
2 CONC Gettysburg. Luckily he was taken prisoner,  not killed. In the grim 
2 CONC prison at Point Lookout, Maryland, he spent the next twenty-two months of 
2 CONC his young life.
2 CONT 
2 CONT He did not waste his time. There were many educated men among his fellow 
2 CONC prisoners, from whom he could learn a great deal. He sought the post of 
2 CONC prison librarian and, having already a strong religious bent, as 
2 CONC assistant chaplain, though not yet twenty years old. In later years, when 
2 CONC asked where he was educated, he would say, with the ever-present twinkle 
2 CONC in his eye, "I was graduated in the Academic and Theological Departments 
2 CONC of Point Lookout Prison." It was not a bad school, as he was a man of 
2 CONC marked erudication. After his release from prison he pressed his way back 
2 CONC to the battlefield but, before reaching Lynchburg, he heard of Lee's 
2 CONC surrender.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Immediately upon his return to his home he embarked upon the arduous work 
2 CONC of a country pastor, with churches widely separated and at long distances 
2 CONC from his home. Prison had taken its toll and he was never vigorous in 
2 CONC health. Nevertheless he spent many weary hours on horseback, riding to 
2 CONC such distant places as Luray, Riverton, Pleasant Vale, Little River, 
2 CONC North Fork, Salem and Sperryville. He preached at Front Royal, Mt. Salem, 
2 CONC Carter's Run, Enon, Jerusalem, Long Branch and, when no churches were 
2 CONC available, in schoolhouses, at cross-roads, and wherever the opportunity 
2 CONC presented itself. His efforts gained himself a large following and hosts 
2 CONC of devoted friends.

2 CONT According to the Rev. Dr. Charles T. Herndon, whom he had baptized and 
2 CONC who admired him greatly, he was 'mentally .. richly endowed.' He was a 
2 CONC profound thinker; he possessed a well-trained imagination that, when 
2 CONC moved by some great gospel theme, took him on splendid flights of 
2 CONC oratory. His great heart loved God and men. He was a most diligent and 
2 CONC reverent student of God's word and could proclaim its truths with great 
2 CONC power. As pastor he was devoted to his flock and loved them with a deep 
2 CONC and tender affection that bound them to himself with deathless devotion."
